Kura Kura, Indonesian for “turtle”, is changing the landscape of Balinese beer — bringing a preservative, additive-free, and low-ABV option to the scene. We designed the brand identity and packaging to capture contemporary Bali’s vibrancy and freedom. The symbol is a tribute to the ocean’s significance in Balinese culture, symbolising the meeting of waves and land and the fins of marine mammals. It also subtly nods to the kites in the expansive blue Balinese sky, while the traditional textiles and iconography of the island inspire brand colours and patterns.

BRIEF

“Create brand presence to support our ambition of becoming the number one craft beer in Indonesia – premium, restrained, unique and enduring but also friendly, fun, positive and approachable with global appeal. A design that represents the modern Balinese lifestyle.”

APPROACH

Kura Kura’s brand identity and packaging are designed to both capture the vibrancy of the contemporary Balinese lifestyle and express their core values of freedom, relaxation, escape and compassion.

The logotype and symbol pay respect to the ocean coming to land, the flipper-y fin shapes of marine mammals and vintage surfboards – the design system is flexible with multiple lockup options for large-scale, wide format, vertical and small spaces.

Kura Kura’s brand colours are inspired by the iconic moments and beautiful landscapes of Bali, chosen to both aid flavour communication of the beers and subconsciously connect with the natural environment. Also, as a nod to the rich historical tradition of Balinese textiles, a black and white gingham pattern is used sparingly in the visual identity and serves as the underlying grid structure for their visual communications.

 
 
 
 

OUTCOME

“We are super happy with how the brand has translated into the real world. Over the past two and a half years we have really built a very strong brand across Bali, Jakarta and the rest of the country.
